The Resilience Group helps local people, families and organisations prepare for emergencies, respond to difficult situations, and access practical support when it is needed most. Our work includes emergency planning, flood and power cut preparedness, first aid awareness, training, and support for vulnerable residents. We work closely with volunteers, local charities, schools, community groups, emergency services and public sector partners to help make the community safer, stronger and better connected.
Resilience and emergency planning
We help the community prepare for incidents such as flooding, power failures and other emergencies. This includes maintaining local emergency plans, identifying useful equipment and resources, and working with partners to understand how residents can be supported safely during a crisis. The group has also taken part in training around rest centres, emergency response and community resilience, helping volunteers understand how to work alongside local authorities and other response teams.
Supporting local families through schools
Since the start of the COVID pandemic and the subsequent cost of living crisis, we have worked with pastoral leads in local primary schools to support young families who find themselves facing hardship. We began by supporting families at Riccall Primary School and, over the past six years, have expanded our support to include Barlby Hilltop Primary School and Selby Community Primary School. To date, we have made more than one hundred donations. Unfortunately, we are seeing growing demand for our support across the district. As a result, we are planning to continue expanding our work with other local primary schools.
First aid and training
We support training that gives local people the confidence to help others. In partnership with St John Ambulance, we have helped organise first aid sessions covering CPR, defibrillator use, choking, stroke awareness and severe bleeding. Our aim is to build a community where more people feel able to step forward in an emergency.
Supporting people and organisations
Alongside emergency planning, we provide practical support to vulnerable people, families and local organisations. This has included funding inclusive activities for children with special educational needs, neurodiversity stay-and-play sessions, support for older people at risk of loneliness, food support, community transport, bike projects and local social activities.By working with schools, charities, community groups, the police and other partners, we help direct support to the people and places where it can make the greatest difference.
Practical help, local impact
The Resilience Group exists to make the community stronger, safer and more connected. Whether through planning, training, funding, equipment, volunteers or partnership working, we look for practical ways to support local needs and help people through challenging times.
